What is markup?
Markup is the percentage added to the cost of a product to determine its selling price. A 40% markup on a $50 item means you sell it for $70.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is calculated on cost. Margin is calculated on selling price. A 40% markup is not the same as a 40% margin. A $50 cost with 40% markup = $70 sell price = 28.6% margin.
How do I calculate selling price from cost and markup?
Selling price = Cost ร— (1 + markup/100). Example: $50 cost with 40% markup โ†’ 50 ร— 1.40 = $70.
What markup percentage should I use?
It depends on your industry. Retail typically uses 50โ€“100%, restaurants 200โ€“300%, software can be higher. Use the calculator to experiment with different margins.
